United win promotion to what is now the Championship after defeating Peterborough 4-0 at the Manor on this day 28 years ago.

In my thirty odd years supporting the club, this and 2016 were the only times I’ve seen us win a promotion on home soil.

Somewhat similar games too with goalless first halves, the deadlock broken early in the second via a corner and then the floodgates opening for a nice a relaxed last twenty minutes or so.

More of that over the coming days and weeks please, Oxford!

The referee points to the spot after John Aldridge is fouled by Viv Anderson and the striker duly nets the second goal of the game as the U’s defeat Arsenal 3-0
at the Manor to secure top flight safety. Billy Hamilton netted the third and his last goal for Oxford at the death.

Midfielder Ray Houghton had opened the scoring early on for the U’s.
